On this occasion DC Vice President Josko Moric slammed the previous coalition government for failing to show more determination in countering corruption. He recalled that the parliament adopted a national anti-corruption programme with an action plan in March 2002 but their implementation had not yet started.
"As a result, corruption continued to spread, and giving its opinion on Croatia's EU membership application, the European Commission highlighted corruption as a particular problem in its avis," the DC official said.
Some measures which the DC proposes are a new law on funds for political parties and a broad coalition to be set up by political parties, trade unions, civil associations, NGOs and media in the fight against corruption which Moric described as violation of ethics in political decision-making and office-holding.
Moric added that the DC had not yet informed its coalition partners (the ruling Croatian Democratic Union i.e. HDZ and the Social Liberals i.e HSLS) of this anti-corruption law.
Commenting on statements of Judge Slakvo Lozina whose ruling in the Lora war crimes case was quashed by the Supreme Court, Moric said that Lozina "will have to decide whether he will be a judge or a politician".
Another DC Vice-President, Durica Misin, announced that the party would move some changes to the new traffic safety law. The DC will propose that absolute prohibition of alcohol should be in force for young drivers aged between 18 and 25, and that those old up to 65 should be allowed to have 0.5 per mille of alcohol in the blood.
