SARAJEVO, Aug 21 (Hina) - A vast majority of citizens in Bosnia-Herzegovina would at this moment vote for the country's entry into the European Union if a referendum on the issue were held now, and many people believe that it is more important for Bosnia to have good relations with the EU than with the United States, according to results of an opinion poll which has covered 1,550 respondents.

Results of the poll, which was conducted at the request of the EU Mission in Sarajevo, were presented in the Bosnian capital last Tuesday by the Deputy Chief of the EU Mission, Renzo Davidi, who said that it was clear that in Bosnia there was strong and stable support to efforts aimed at the country's joining the European integration processes.

Of 1,550 respondents, 43.2 percent believe that it is a priority to promote good relations with Brussels and only 2.4 percent hold that this position is wrong.

Even 87.5 percent say they would vote for Bosnia's entry into the EU if a referendum on the matter were organised now. Only 4.3 percent voiced opposition to Bosnia's becoming EU member-state.

Nearly two thirds of the respondents believe that Bosnia's admission to the European bloc would help improve their own status, but 31 percent do not still believe in such an outcome

Less than a half of the respondents do not know when the EU was set up, but a majority know EU symbols and how many countries are EU members.

Almost 60 percent cite wide-spread crime and corruption as the most serious obstacle for Bosnia's efforts to enter the EU, 54 percent believe that war criminals and the current economic situation are key problems and almost half cite that the biggest problem is the country's division into the two entities.

Less than 30 percent fear that the culture, language and geographical position of Bosnia might be obstacles on the road towards the EU.

Citizens slam politicians from ruling parties for failing to make enough efforts to improve Bosnia's chance of accession into the EU. According to the poll, two opposition parties -- Social Democrat Party (SDP) and the Party of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) -- invest more efforts in this field.
