ZAGREB, Aug 14 (Hina) - Last year, 753 Croatians lost their lives intraffic accidents, and the death toll in road accidents rose by 114 incomparison to 2002, according to figures released recently by theCentral Bureau of Statistics.
ZAGREB, Aug 14 (Hina) - Last year, 753 Croatians lost their lives in traffic accidents, and the death toll in road accidents rose by 114 in comparison to 2002, according to figures released recently by the Central Bureau of Statistics.

Thus, road accident deaths made up 1.4 percent of the entire number of deaths in Croatia in 2003.

Regarding the gender of victims in traffic accidents, 581 (77.2 percent) persons who lost their lives in this kind of accidents were men, and 172 were of the female gender.

The highest number of victims, i.e. 562 (74.6 percent) were killed in vehicles, they were followed by the number of victims-pedestrians (108 deaths). Railway accidents took lives of 25 people last year, while the number of cyclists who were killed in road accidents was 53.

The county with the highest road accident deaths is Zagreb (84 dead persons), it was followed by Osijek-Baranja County (78) and Split-Dalmatia County (66).

Even 89 victims were old between 20 and 24 years. The second category, according to the age structure, covered those above 75 years, as 63 elderly citizens lost their lives in traffic accidents last year. What is also worrisome is the fact that 61 Croatians aged between 15 to 19 were killed in this sort of accidents.

The most critical month was July in 2003 with 11.9 percent of all traffic accidents occurring in that period. The largest number of pedestrians were killed in November (13.9 percent).
