Juris Protecta has also requested parliament to erase a Criminal Code provision banning the commenting of court rulings.
The association released a statement on Friday in which its president, Zlatko Zeljko, says that Juris Protecta, several nongovernmental organisations, trade unions and employers' associations sent a joint statement to all members of parliament urging them to initiate changing the Criminal Code, while the media were asked to contribute to the request for the erasion of the aforementioned provision.
The provision stipulating that commenting non-final rulings in public is subject to punishment with up to six months' imprisonment is contrary to democratic standards, read the statement.
It said the provision was incorporated into the Criminal Code in the "rigid" pre-2000 regime headed by Ivic Pasalic with the purpose of suppressing the freedom of non-regime media. The statement added the provision was today used by the Croatian Judges Association "to shut up journalists reporting about the pranks of the Croatian judiciary".
