ZAGREB, Aug 10 (Hina) - The Association of Workers' Trade Unions of
Croatia (URSH) and the Croatian Chamber of Crafts' fishermen's and hauliers'
guilds on Tuesday slammed the latest increase in the prices of oil and oil
products.
The URSH sent an open letter to the government vehemently blasting the new
increase it said would undoubtedly lead to an increase in the costs of living
and a further deterioration of the already sufficiently poor social situation
in Croatia.
The URSH urged the government to urgently define measures aimed at keeping
in check the growth of oil prices, notably those of energy sources, and to
urgently concretise economic and social policy measures in order to curb
unemployment and the decline of standards. In the contrary, the URSH will
consider measures to counter the government's moves as early as this autumn.
The Association also reiterated its request to the government to increase
the lowest salary by 15 percent, the amount of this year's increase in the
prices of energy sources and other utilities.
The fishermen's and hauliers' guilds said in a statement the latest
increase in the prices of diesel fuels would negatively affect the business of
both guilds' members. They urged the government to reduce the prices and
requested an urgent meeting with representatives of the economy and agriculture
ministries and the INA oil company.
The fishermen expect the latest moves to lead to a significant drop in the
export of fish to the European Union market.
