In 2010, WIPO received 39,687 applications for the registration of international trademarks, going up by 12.8 % up from 2009 which saw a plunge of 16 %.
South Korea and China, each with 42 % growth, were top performers in submitting trademark applications.
They were followed by Italy (38.7 %), the United States (29.6%), the European Union (26.9%) and Japan (20.2%), said WIPO, which gathers 85 countries under the Madrid System for the International Registration of Trademarks (“the Madrid system”).
After being one of the few countries in the world with a rise in international trademark filings in 2009, Croatia saw a 34.5% decline in submitting international trademark applications in 2010 with 154 applications, after a 17.5% rise in 2009.
