ZAGREB, May 1 (Hina) - Asked to comment on the refusal by the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague to grant Croatian generals Mladen Markac and Ivan Cermak provisional release before they are interviewed by the prosecution, President Stjepan Mesic said on Saturday that court decisions could not be influenced and that the decision to keep the generals in custody was a matter of procedure.
ZAGREB, May 1 (Hina) - Asked to comment on the refusal by the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague to grant Croatian generals Mladen Markac and Ivan Cermak provisional release before they are interviewed by the prosecution, President Stjepan Mesic said on Saturday that court decisions could not be influenced and that the decision to keep the generals in custody was a matter of procedure.#L# "Personally, I wish they could have been granted provisional release, but they obviously have to give certain statements. There is no need to dramatise this or use it to gain political points," Mesic told reporters in Zagreb's Maksimir Park where he attended the central celebration of International Labour Day. Asked to comment on claims about possible new Hague tribunal indictments made by Croatian Party of Rights parliamentary deputy Pero Kovacevic yesterday, Mesic declined comment saying that Kovacevic had spoken untruths on many previous occasions.
