VUKOVAR, April 23 (Hina) - The first French ambassador to Croatia, Georges-Marie Chenu said in Vukovar on Friday that the governments of Western European countries had acted badly in light of the events in the former Yugoslavia in 1991, failing to follow the big principles they referred to.#L# This minimalist reaction from Europe was a grave political mistake, Chenu said at the fourth international symposium "Suffering as Inexhaustible Source of Cultural Inspiration", which was organised by the association "Passion Heritage". The event started yesterday and will last until 25 April. Delivering a speech entitled "The Suffering of Vukovar - A Warning for the Future", Chenu said that all countries were obliged to promote justice and humanity to which Croatia could contribute by spreading the truth about what happened in eastern Slavonia and Vukovar in 1991. Asked if Europe today was more sensitive towards Croatia than it was in the early 1990s, Chenu said it was, adding that the reason for that was Croatia's having prepared very well to join united Europe. "Integration into Europe is the only way for your country to follow. On that road, Croatia must insist on its own uniqueness and on joining Europe as such," Chenu said. (Hina) rml sb
