BELGRADE, April 21 (Hina) - Belgrade-based electronic media and some newspapers reported that the the European Commission gave the green light to Croatia to enter negotiations on EU membership, saying that "this west Balkan country meet a majority of the political and economic criteria for the start of official negotiations", and that its candidate status would be discussed at the EU summit in June.

It says that "the most important part of the avis is the assessment of meeting the political criteria and in Croatia's case an assessment on the country's cooperation with the ICTY is of great importace, given that some EU member states, notably Great Britain, said they would not support Croatia's candidacy status without full cooperation with the ICTY" Radio B92 in its morning news broadcast pointed to the fact that ICTY chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte had positively assessed Croatia's cooperation with the Hague-based tribunal, which was one of the crucial factors for the European Commission's positive avis.
