MILOSEVIC TRIAL TO RESUME WITH SUBSTITUTE JUDGE

THE HAGUE, March 31 (Hina) - The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) has decided that the trial of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic will continue with a new judge who will replace the ailing Judge Richard May, who resigned at the end of February, ICTY spokesman Jim Landale said on Wednesday.
THE HAGUE, March 31 (Hina) - The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) has decided that the trial of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic will continue with a new judge who will replace the ailing Judge Richard May, who resigned at the end of February, ICTY spokesman Jim Landale said on Wednesday.#L# The trial chamber has unanimously decided to continue the trial with a new presiding judge, Landale said at a weekly press briefing. Milosevic denied consent for the appointment of a new judge and the trial chamber decided in the interest of justice and in line with the tribunal's rules to continue the trial with a substitute judge. The new judge, who will be appointed by ICTY president Theodor Meron, should by June 8, when the trial is to due to resume, examine more than 30,000 pages of the trial record and tens of thousands of documents, transcripts and other evidence and explicitly confirm that he is familiar with the case.
