Although it was internationally recognised, diplomas issued by this
40-year-old Catholic classics-programme school were not valid in
Serbia and Montenegro before the latest decision.
The decision of the Vojvodina government to officially recognise the
"Paulinum" gymnasium could be important in the context of the upcoming
establishment of a faculty of philosophy and theology in Subotica, one
of the three basic institutions of a future Subotica university.
It is expected that Croatian would be one of the three main languages
at this university, along with Hungarian and Serbian, which means that
the Croat minority in Vojvodina would be able to have classes in their
mother tongue at all levels of education - from kindergarten to
faculty.
Croatian has been in use in Serbian schools since 2002 when Croats
were granted the status of a national minority.
Subotica was the first municipality where conditions were created for
the introduction of classes in Croatian. The Croatian language has
been officially in use in Subotica since 1991. Croats account for some
12 percent of the local population.
