The declaration expressed a desire for closer cooperation in all
European programmes and strongly condemned recent terrorist attacks in
Madrid.
At a reception given for the mayors, Slovene President Janez Drnovsek
expressed support for the admission of Southeast European countries to
the EU.
"Slovenia, as a member of the EU, will try to play a positive and
constructive role in building the Europe of tomorrow. Our interest
will be focused on Southeastern Europe. We want those countries to
have clear European prospects and become members as soon as possible,"
Drnovsek said.
