MOSTAR, Feb 19 (Hina) - During his first visit to Mostar after imposing
a new Statute in the southern Bosnian town in late January, the
international community's High Representative Paddy Ashdown said on
Thursday he was satisfied with the way the Status had been implemented
so far.#L#
Ashdown said that the first part of the implementation of the Statute
should be completed by March 15. According to previous announcements,
that should be followed by transformation of the former six Mostar
municipalities, which Ashdown discontinued with the Statute, into six
constituencies for municipal elections which will take place in
October.
Mostar deputy mayor Ljubo Beslic said on Wednesday the Croat side
would implement the imposed Statute, but at the same time they would
request through institutions a legal remedy for the election system in
Mostar, which Beslic said brought Croats who are the majority in
Mostar in a less favourable position in relation to Bosnian Muslims.
It is no secret that the Croatian Democratic Union and the Social
Democratic Action have contradictory standpoints, namely that they do
not agree with my decision regarding Mostar, Ashdown said. The first
way of protesting against such a decision is through courts and the
legal system, said Ashdown and added that obstructing the
implementation of his decision would be the wrong way to go.
