THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, Feb 4(Hina) - Judges at the UN war crimes tribunal in
The Hague on Wednesday asked defence counsel for Yugoslav Army General
Pavle Strugar to provide additional medical documents after they had
called for the suspension of proceedings on account of the ill health
of the accused.#L#
Defence attorneys Goran Rodic and Vladimir Petrovic requested at a
hearing on Tuesday that the trial be temporarily suspended because
their 70-year-old client was unable to follow it. They filed a report
by a specialist who had found that Strugar was suffering from
dementia, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The chief prosecutor in the case, Susane Sommers, said that the report
was not authoritative and that the request for the suspension of
proceedings was not based in fact.
Presiding Judge Kevin Parker asked the defence to file a written
request and enclose additional medical documents, while at the same
time he put forward a proposal to the prosecutors that Strugar be
examined by a medical expert appointed by the prosecution.
Strugar is on trial for war crimes committed by the Yugoslav Army
Second Operations Group under his command during attacks on the
Croatian Adriatic city of Dubrovnik in December 1991.
