ZAGREB, Feb 1(Hina) - The head of Croatia's Muslim religious community,
Sefko Omerbasic, conducted the main prayer at the Zagreb mosque on
Sunday on the occasion of Greater Bairam.#L#
Offering his best wishes to the Muslim faithful on the occasion of the
most important Muslim holiday, Omerbasic said that the holiday of
Greater Bairam originated from the largest gathering of Muslims from
all over the world at Mount Arafat.
On Greater Bairam the Muslims remember Allah's message to Ibrahim, the
founder of monotheistic religions - Christianity, Judaism and Islam -
to call on people all over the world to make a pilgrimage to him.
The pilgrimage to Arafat is an expression of obedience, faith and
readiness to do all we can to live a life worthy of human beings, to
help each other because solidarity is the only guarantee of our
survival in this world, Omerbasic said.
He voiced dissatisfaction with the "treatment of Islam in Europe which
considers itself the cradle of human freedoms and democracy and where
only a few countries, including Croatia, have recognised Islam".
Alluding to Slovenia, he wondered about "the fierce opposition to the
construction of a mosque in a neighbouring country which will soon
become a member of the European Union and which is home to 50,000
autochthonous Muslims".
At the end of his message, Omerbasic relayed messages of
congratulations of the Croatian Bishops' Conference and Croatia's top
political officials.
