"We are here to thank those who left Brac to make Chile a better
country. We are here to pay in a way our debt for all they have given
us," the Chilean president said unveiling the plaque in the Museum of
the Island of Brac in the town of Skrip.
Lagos Escobar sent a message to his friends in Europe not to be afraid
of immigrants and to see the richness Chile had got with immigrants
arriving from Croatia, Germany, Italy, Spain and other countries.
He called on the Croatian authorities to draw lessons from the
experience of Croatian emigrants.
"I am very happy to be here at a moment when your country is meeting
new challenges on its road towards the European Union and I hope that
you, as your predecessors, will know to accept the challenge and
become a part of the new Europe, the new country, preserving your own
culture and identity," the Chilean head of state added.
