WASHINGTON/CLEVELAND, Jan 24(Hina) - American Paul Unger received a
United States Agency for International Development (USAID) award for
his contribution to the improvement of public administration in
Croatia at a ceremony at Cleveland University on Friday.#L#
Unger was awarded for his work in the professional training and
education of and technical assistance to state, county and local
officials in Croatia.
In 1997 Unger established Unger Croatia Institute for Public
Administration whose administration program at Harvard University has
been completed by a number of Croatian officials, including ministers
and their assistants, central bank governors, chairmen of
parliamentary committees and ambassadors.
In 2001 Unger launched a programme for local administration at
Cleveland University.
The success of these programmes prompted him to establish cooperation
with Rijeka University, which will introduce new post-graduate studies
in public administration and public health administration this
spring.
Attending the award-giving ceremony, among others, was Senator George
Voinovich, who voiced support for Croatia's efforts to join the EU and
NATO.
Present were also Croatia's Ambassador to the United States, Ivan
Grdesic, and Rijeka University Rector Daniel Rukavina.
Unger first came to Croatia in 1945, when he was appointed manager of
the UN humanitarian assistance programme for the former Yugoslavia.
Before that, he was head of a Croat refugee camp in Egypt.
In Croatia, he married a Croat, Sonja Franz.
