ZAGREB, Jan 19 (Hina) - The Croatian Supreme Court has quashed the verdict against Zorana Banic, which sentenced her to 13 years in prison for war crimes against Croatian civilians in Skabrnja, and ordered a re-trial before the Zadar
County Court.
ZAGREB, Jan 19 (Hina) - The Croatian Supreme Court has quashed the
verdict against Zorana Banic, which sentenced her to 13 years in
prison for war crimes against Croatian civilians in Skabrnja, and
ordered a re-trial before the Zadar County Court.#L#
Under the Supreme Court's ruling, Banic will wait for a re-trial in
detention in which she was placed in October 2001.
The verdict, delivered by the court of first instance, was quashed
because of substantial violations of the criminal procedure because it
was vague and contradictory and because some of the facts were
wrong.
The County Court in Zadar will thus decide on the responsibility of
Zorana Banic for the third time. She was initially sentenced in
absentia in 1998 to 20 years in prison.
