ZAGREB, Jan 16 (Hina) - Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader Ivica Racan said on Friday he would run for party president again at the SDP electoral convention due to take place by the end of May.#L# Racan spoke to reporters on Mount Sljeme overlooking Zagreb, where the SDP leadership has gathered for a two-day meeting behind closed doors to address current home affairs, intraparty issues and the stand to be taken in parliament. Asked to comment on media allegations that some SDP members were unhappy with the current leadership and wanted changes in the leading opposition party, Racan said he would run for party president once again and hoped there would be many candidates to run against. "We are ready to show our strength, today in the opposition as well as tomorrow, when we will be in power again." Racan said SDP activity had slowed down over the past four years when the party was in power, but that now the party would intensify its activity to come out stronger than before. Asked if he thought the Ivo Sanader Cabinet would complete its four-year term, Racan said the SDP wanted a successful government due to national interests, a government to compete with instead of basing the party's strength on the government's weaknesses. "Whether they will endure the whole term of office is in their hands." Asked to comment on announcements from the Croatian People's Party (HNS) that it would soon take over the leading role in left-wing politics, Racan said the SDP would continue to cooperate with the HNS and did not wish to comment on its ambitions.
