ZAGREB, Jan 12 (Hina) - President Stjepan Mesic on Monday received a
delegation of the environmental organisation "Eko Kvarner" for talks
on the Druzba Adria project and its effect on the environment, the
president's office said in a statement.#L#
It was said that the most important thing was for independent experts
to complete a study of the influence of the project on the environment
as soon as possible and as efficiently as possible.
Members of "Eko Kvarner" said in a letter sent to the president and
the media before the meeting that they believed that "the president
was incompletely or erroneously informed about the problems of the
Druzba Adria project," adding that "economic benefits from the project
are exaggerated".
The aim of the Druzba Adria project is to transport oil by pipeline
from oilfields in the Russian Federation to the port of Omisalj on the
northern Adriatic island of Krk. Through Croatian territory, oil would
run through the pipeline operated by the state-owned company
"Jadranski naftovod" (Adriatic Oil Pipeline), known by its Croatian
acronym JANAF. Five million tonnes of oil are planned to be brought in
during the first year, after which the amount will increase to 15
million tonnes a year.
