BELGRADE, Dec 21 (Hina) - The second defendant in the trial of the Serb paramilitary unit "The Scorpions", which started before the Special War Crimes Tribunal in Belgrade on Tuesday, has confessed to involvement in the murder of six Muslims from the Srebrenica area of eastern Bosnia in the summer of 1995.

Since the accused Pero Petrasevic decided not to present his defence case orally, his written confession was read out during a hearing on Wednesday.

Petrasevic made the confession during the investigation on 8 September, saying that he was the first of the accused to fire a burst and kill one of the prisoners in the village of Godinske Bare near Trnovo on 16 or 17 July 1995.

The order to shoot was issued personally by the first defendant, Scorpions commander Slobodan Medic aka Boca, who was not present at the scene of the crime, Petrasevic said.

Petrasevic said in his statement that he could not remember which of the accused fired because he was in a state of shock, but that he knows that the accused Branislav Medic, Milorad Momic and Slobodan Davidovic were present there.

Petrasevic said that, although he witnessed the murders, Aleksandar Medic did not shoot because his rifle was clean, whereas another accused, Aleksandar Vukov, had left for his front-line position before the murders took place.

The first defendant Medic ordered that the executions should be recorded by video camera, which was done by a member of the Scorpions, Slobodan Stojkovic. The indictment was issued on the basis of that recording.

The trial is separated into those against the Scorpions cited in the indictment, Milorad Momic who is on the run and Slobodan Davidovic who is on trial before the County Court in Zagreb for crimes committed in Trnovo and for the maltreatment of Croatian prisoners in Bobota, eastern Croatia in October 1991.

After the exhumation of the six Muslim victims, three of them -- Azmir Alispahic (17), Safet Fejzic (17) and Sadik Saltic (36) -- were identified by DNA analysis. Smail Ibrahimovic and Fadil Salkic were identified by their families after they saw the video recording, while the identity of the last victim remains unknown.

The trial continues on Thursday.
