ZAGREB, Dec 21 (Hina) - More than half the population of European Union, acceding and admission candidate states feel Croatia should join the Union, according to results of the Standard Eurobarometer 64 public opinion survey released on Tuesday.

The survey was conducted between October 10 and November 5 in 29 countries -- 25 EU members, two acceding countries (Romania and Bulgaria) and two admission candidates (Croatia and Turkey). A total of 29,430 people were polled.

High support was given for further EU expansion to three members of the European Economic Area -- Switzerland and Norway (77% each), and Iceland (68%).

Support was also higher for Croatia (51%) and Bulgaria (48%), while public opinion was less favourable regarding Romania (43%), Ukraine (42%), Macedonia (41%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (40%), Serbia and Montenegro (39%), Albania (33%) and Turkey (31%).

Seventy per cent of those polled in the Union's new members and 47 per cent in old members were in favour of Croatia's accession.

Nearly 50 per cent of Europeans supported further EU enlargement, although the difference among states is very big. The population of new members is much more open and positive regarding enlargement than the 15 old member states.
