ZAGREB, Dec 16 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks on Friday thanked the US Congress for support to Croatia's admission to NATO, stating that the support would encourage reforms that have been launched, the Sabor said in a statement.

The US Congress House of Representatives on December 15 unanimously voted a resolution saying that it fully supported Croatia's joining NATO as soon as possible.

The resolution says that Croatia has made significant progress in meeting political, economic, military and other western democratic criteria for NATO membership and that it stands out as a reliable partner to the United States, contributing with its active involvement to security and stability in Southeast Europe.

"These two unequivocal messages are a sign of acknowledgement of the Croatian government's sincere and full commitment... to implementing thorough reforms, particularly its commitment to taking the lead in regional cooperation as an important and unavoidable condition for achieving a common, far-reaching goal - the permanent strengthening of peace and security in this part of Europe," Seks said in a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert.

The Sabor Speaker said he believed the resolution confirmed the credibility of Croatia's policy and supported its efforts to further strengthen democratic institutions and the rule of law, respect for human rights, and the fight against global terrorism.
