ZAGREB, Nov 28 (Hina) - Along with mine clearance, providing for mine victims is the most important aspect of mine action, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said at the opening of a conference of countries signatories to the Ottawa convention in Zagreb on Sunday evening.

"I would like to stress the importance of an organised, adjusted and continuing care for mine victims," Mesic said, stressing that Croatia was a bridge country between countries with mines and donor countries which help in solving that problem.

The sixth meeting of countries signatories to the Mine Ban Treaty - the so-called Ottawa convention - which is being held in Zagreb until Friday, will focus on what has been achieved so far and define priorities for the next period, Nobel prize winner Jody Williams said at the opening.

The conference is held under the auspices of Croatian Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic.

Also present at the conference was Belgian diplomat Jean Lindt, who chaired the forth meeting of the countries signatories to the Ottawa convention, and Wolfgang Petritsch, who chaired the conference of the Ottawa convention last year in Nairobi.

The present were also addressed by Zagreb mayor Miland Bandic.

The event pooled some 700 representatives of nongovernmental organisations, civil societies and experts in mine action.
