BRUSSELS, Nov 15 (Hina) - Croatia on Tuesday started the second phase of screening for science and research, an in-depth analysis of the level of adjustment of the national legislation in the area to EU legislation. In the next two months the European Commission is expected to prepare a report on recommendations to start negotiations on this chapter.

The importance of bilateral screening lies to a great extent in the fact that it significantly contributes to a favourable report of the EC on every chapter, Croatia's chief negotiator Vladimir Drobnjak said.

During the second, bilateral stage of screening, representatives of a candidate country explain to the European Commission differences between the national legislation and the acquis communautaire in the relevant area.

At the first, explanatory meeting, EC representatives explained to Croatian and Turkish negotiators EU standards in the area of science and research.

"I am very satisfied with the quality and content of today's presentation, which was also commended by EC representatives," Drobnjak said.

"After the bilateral screening is finished, we expect the EC to issue by the end of this year or early next year a report on screening with concrete recommendations on the opening of negotiations on that chapter," Drobnjak said.
