Batic is suspected of abusing duty while he was a minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic. He was arrested on suspicion that on 7 June 2003 he released from custody a member of the Krusevac criminal ring, who was nabbed during the police operation "Sabre", launched after the assassination of Prime Minister Djindjic.
Batic's lawyer, many NGOs and opposition parties label the proceedings against Batic as the politically-motivated campaign launched against him by the current authorities.
