ZAGREB, Sept 22 (Hina) - Cities in Croatia and other European countries on Thursday marked the European Car Free Day to promote sustainable public transport and encourage citizens to use means of transport other than cars.

The centre of Zagreb was closed to motor vehicle traffic in an effort to promote healthier forms of mobility and environmental protection.

The Zagreb public transport company ZET has joined in the activities, introducing fare free transport by buses, trams and funicular. Croatian Railways introduced fare free transport on a local commuter line.

The Car Free Day is aimed at promoting healthier forms of mobility, walking and cycling, as well as environmental protection.

The Car Free Day marks the end of the European Mobility Week, which this year was organised in cities and municipalities in the 25 EU countries, countries covered by the European Free Trade Association, Croatia and Romania, as well as Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Japan, Taiwan and Venezuela.
