Optimism index lowest to date - survey

ZAGREB, Sept 19 (Hina) - The optimism index in Croatia in August was38.6 and was down 1.8 points from July and 5.5 points from August2004, according to data released on Monday by the market researchagency Hendal.
ZAGREB, Sept 19 (Hina) - The optimism index in Croatia in August was 38.6 and was down 1.8 points from July and 5.5 points from August 2004, according to data released on Monday by the market research agency Hendal.

The August index value was the lowest since the survey began in September 2003.

The optimism index ranges from zero, which stands for total pessimism, to 100, which stands for total optimism, and its value is based on several subindexes.

In August, as in preceding months, citizens were least satisfied with the general economic situation, and the value of this subindex was 16.3, the lowest to date and the first time below 17 points since the first survey was conducted.

The subindex measuring the current quality of life was 43.1, 3.1 points up from July.

Citizens were also less optimistic regarding economic conditions in the next six months and the value of this subindex was 35.5, down from 42.5 in July.

Citizens were most optimistic regarding the quality of life in the next six months, with the value of this subindex standing at 48, down 1.8 points from July.

The subindex for the personal financial situation in the next six months was 45.5, down 4.2 points from July.

The subindex for the quality of life in the next six months was 43.1, up 3.1 points from July.

The optimism index is based on monthly surveys covering 400 people above 18 across Croatia. It was devised on the model of the American optimism index by the TechnoMetrica Institute of Policy and Politics.

In Croatia the index was the highest in December 2003, when it was 50.1 points.
