ZAGREB, Sept 19 (Hina) - A delegation of the Finnish Parliament's European affairs grand committee, led by chairman Jari Vilen, on Monday visited the Croatian Sabor for talks with Gordan Jandrokovic, head of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee, and Milorad Pupovac, head of the inter-parliamentary cooperation committee.

Jandrokovic thanked for Finland's support to Croatia's efforts to join European integration processes as well as for Helsinki's help in the reform of the state administration.

He said that Croatia had followed the Finnish model when it set up a national committee in charge of monitoring membership talks with the European Union, the Croatian parliament stated in a press release.

Vilen said that his country strongly supported Croatia's aspirations to become an EU member. Stressing that Croatia had made great progress, the Finnish official said he hoped the accession negotiations between Zagreb and the EU would start as soon as possible.

He was also interested in Croatians' attitude to the country's entry into the European bloc and NATO.

According to the press release, Jandrokovic said that currently between 40 and 45 percent of Croatians were in favour of the country's admission to the Union, which he said was the lowest percentage since the country won independence. He added that the start of negotiations would shift the attitude in favour of EU membership.

Jandrokovic also added that the support for the entry into NATO was even lower, but that possible non-admission of Croatia into the alliance would not be very well accepted in the Croatian public or other countries in south-eastern Europe.

Milorad Pupovac informed the Finnish delegation that representatives of ethnic minorities in Croatia strongly supported the Croatian government's commitment to the country's admission to the EU.

Pupovac said that the Ivo Sanader cabinet was implementing an active policy towards minorities with respect to all minority issues, the press release reads.

A state secretary at the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry, Marija Pejcinovic Buric, received the Finnish delegation for talks on Croatia's plans about integration into the EU, the Foreign Ministry reported.

Vilen reiterated at the talks that his country backed launching the EU-Croatia membership talks as soon as possible, and added that Helsinki was in favour of the Union's further enlargement.
