ZAGREB, Sept 8 (Hina) - The Croatian government met on Thursday to discuss a number of issues, including its obligation to settle its debt to pensioners.

The government stands by its commitment to repay its debt to pensioners and there will be no omissions in this process, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said.

The Statute of the Pensioners' Fund was approved at the session.

The government decided to send a team of forensic experts to the United States to help with the identification of victims of Hurricane Katrina.

An expert commission for the prevention of bird flue was set up to monitor the epidemiological situation. Assistant Agriculture Minister Mate Brstilo was appointed head of the commission.

The situation in Croatia is not alarming, but we should be prepared, Agriculture Minister Petar Cobankovic said.

Croatia has banned the import and transit of all kinds of poultry, consumer eggs and poultry products originating from countries where cases of bird flue have been confirmed.

A bill proposing the extension of the time limit for the completion of privatisation audits by 30 September 2006 was sent to Parliament to be discussed under fast-track procedure.

Gordan Bakota was relieved of his duties as state secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs so that he could take up a new post. He was succeeded by Vera Varga.
