Mesic said in his message that Luksic would be remembered for "unselfishly extending his hand to Croatian citizens in the most difficult of times, donating considerable funds during the Homeland War".
Mesic also noted that Luksic had been among the first important investors in the Croatian economy and that through his business activities and contacts he had made a substantial contribution to establishing closer ties between the country of his origin, Croatia, and Chile.
Luksic, whose personal fortune was recently estimated at US$1.6 billion, had business interests in the brewing, fishing, banking and telecommunications industries in Chile.
He was the son of a Croat who emigrated to Chile in 1910, and his family was a major shareholder in Chile's second largest bank, Banco de Chile.
Luksic was also involved in the privatisation process in Croatia in the 1990s.
