RAKOVICA, Aug 13 (Hina) - The Karlovac County police on Saturday morning launched an investigation into a plane crash

in which two people were killed when their sports plane hit the Velika Lisina hill overlooking the village of Poljanak in Rakovica municipality, in the area of the Plitvice Lakes national park.

Eight Hungarian "piper" sports planes took off from Zagreb around 7 pm on Friday. Five of them landed in the southern city of Zadar, one had to make an emergency landing in Drnis in the Sibenik hinterland, one crashed at the Velika Lisina hill and one went missing, the Karlovac County Alert Centre reported.

The area of the hill was sealed off last night and the police are still looking for the missing plane, Karlovac County Court investigating judge Mladen Kosijer told reporters this morning.

The court official on duty, Marijan Sostaric, said the plane which crashed had swerved off its set course, heading towards Rakovica, and that its crew could not see due to fog and clouds that they were flying directly towards the hill.

The wreck with the two as yet unidentified burned bodies was discovered by fireman Mirko Hodak, who works at the Plitvice Lakes national park.

Hodak believes that the missing plane hit a transmitter on the 794-metre hill and flew over it, after which it went missing.
