RIJEKA, July 26 (Hina) - A senior official of the Istrian Democratic Party (IDS) told reporters in Rijeka on Tuesday he believed the Croatian judiciary had started investigating the killings of civilians in Osijek in the early 1990s after the Hague war crimes tribunal referred the cases to Croatia.

IDS vice-president Damir Kajin, who bases his assumption on speculation in the parliament of several months ago, said the rift between the president of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and Prime Minister Ivo Sanader and former HDZ member Branimir Glavas happened because Glavas had sought protection from Sanader regarding the Osijek case, which Sanader was unable to provide. The launching of an investigation into the events in Osijek caused the rift between Sanader and Glavas and not the other way round, Kajin said.

The IDS official said the government must make it possible for judicial bodies to independently investigate the case without giving in to possible pressure.

The judiciary is currently the most important segment regarding admission to the EU because Croatia cannot join the EU with dozens of unsolved murders in Osijek, Sisak, Paulin Dvor and Pakracka Poljana, Kajin said.
