PRISTINA, July 3 (Hina) - Kosovo political leaders on Sunday condemned three explosions which rocked downtown Pristina last night, saying their goal was to destabilise Kosovo and postpone its independence.

Apart from material damage, there were no casualties, but every escalation of violence might undermine the hopes of the majority Albanian population in a positive assessment by UN envoy Kai Eide, who is expected to report if the UN-administered province in southern Serbia has become sufficiently stable and democratic since 1999 so that negotiations on its future status can be launched.

"Such dangerous actions are aimed at destabilising Kosovo. They have happened at a time when we are awaiting a positive assessment of progress in Kosovo which will pave the way for the recognition of independence," said Kosovo President Ibrahim Rugova.

The first explosion damaged three UN vehicles stationed in front of the organisation's headquarters in Pristina. The second damaged a mall opposite the headquarters of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe mission, while the third caused minor damage on the Kosovo government headquarters.

Prime Minister Bajram Kosumi too linked the blasts with the report Eide is expected to complete in September.

"It seems there are forces which want to diminish the progress our institutions have achieved," Kosumi said, voicing hope that despite the incident nothing will stop the Kosovo people in the realisation of their goals.

The UN civil administrator in Kosovo, Soren Jessen-Petersen, strongly condemned the perpetrators of the three bomb attacks, the local UN Mission said in a press release.

Jessen-Petersen said he knew the people of Kosovo did not endorse such actions, adding that these actions would not be allowed to undermine the democratic process in Kosovo.
