Milinovic says there is no reason to penalise government spokesman

ZAGREB, Feb 28 (Hina) - Deputy Prime Minister and Vice-President of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party, Darko Milinovic, has said that he sees no reason to punish government spokesman Mladen Pavic for stating that some opposition parties were behind the riots in Zagreb on Saturday.

General Police Director Oliver Grbic said on Monday that the police did not have information that would indicate that opposition parties were behind violent protests that occurred in the streets leading to Zagreb's St. Mark's Square on Saturday.

"I don't see any reason to penalise the government spokesman who said that there were some indications that certain Opposition parties financed last week's protests in Zagreb and Split. There is no reason to punish him for that statement," Milinovic said in the HDZ's main offices in Zagreb when asked by the press if the government would apologise publicly and penalise its spokesman.

Asked whether this meant that the HDZ believed the government spokesman more than it believed the general police director, Milinovic said that one should leave state institutions to do their job.

"Today there are no indications, perhaps there will be tomorrow," the HDZ vice-president said.

Asked to comment on Croatian People's Party (HNS) leader Radimir Cacic's statement that he would file a lawsuit if the government did not distance itself from Pavic's statement and punish him, Milinovic said that Croatia was a democracy and everybody had the right to lodge lawsuits.

"Cacic has probably become accustomed to litigation," Milinovic said, adding "the public is anxious to see the completion of the investigation into Cacic" over the privatisation of the Zelena Punta hotel company.
