HDSSB rejects accusations levelled by HDZ, police comment on Osijek protest

ZAGREB, Feb 28 (Hina) - The HDSSB supports justified protests of disgruntled Croatian citizens who live in difficult conditions, but only if those protests are held in a peaceful and dignified way, as a form of democratic expression of dissatisfaction, Dinko Buric, an official of the parliamentary HDSSB party, headquartered in Osijek, said on Monday.

Buric dismissed accusations from the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) that this regional party, supported by the Social Democratic Party, was behind Saturday's protest in the eastern city of Osijek and attack on the offices of the local HDZ branch.

There is no political party behind the protests that have been launched and that call for the resignation of the current government and Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor, as the hungry and the jobless need no one to help them organise protests, Buric said.

The Osijek-Baranja county police reported on Monday that the organisers of Saturday's rally in the centre of Osijek violated public assembly rules.

Police official Verica Krizic said that criminal charges might be pressed against people who attacked and injured photo-reporter Davor Javorovic at the protest.

She said that the rally had not been reported on time and that its organisers had not provided for security.

She declined to say how many police officers had been engaged during the protest, explaining that it was an official secret.
