5 trials going on at ICTY, 4 cases in appellate proceedings, and 2 indictees still at large

ZAGREB, Feb 25 (Hina) - The job of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), which should close its door at the end of 2014, is nearing completion and currently, hearings for five trials are being conducted, with one case being in the pre-trial stage and two Serb war criminals -- Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic -- still at large.

The Hague-based UN tribunal has so far completed proceedings against 125 people of 161 indicted by that court.

The case of former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) commanders -- Ramush Haradinaj, Idriz Balaj i Lahi Brahimaj -- accused of crimes against Kosovo Serbs, is in the pre-trial stage after the ICTY Appeals Chamber quashed part of the ruling in that case and ordered a retrial which should start in a few months' time.

The presentation of evidence is being conducted at the trial of wartime Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic and at the trial of wartime Bosnian Serb general Zdravko Tolimir, both charged with genocide.

The presentation of the evidence by prosecutors has been completed in three cases: in the case of Serb Radical leader Vojislav Seselj, in the case of former Serbian security officials -- Jovica Stanisic and Frenki Simatovic -- accused of war crimes in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina and in the case of wartime Bosnian Serb police officials -- Mico Stanisic and Stojan Zupljanin.

The trial against six former Bosnian Croat officials in the case dubbed "Prlic and Others" is in the final stage. A verdict is expected in late March in the case of Croatian generals -- Ante Gotovina, Ivan Cermak and Mladen Markac -- accused of war crimes during the Operation Storm when Croatia retook its central and southern areas from rebel Serbs in August 1995.

Closing arguments are scheduled for late March in the case of former Yugoslav Army's chief-of-staff General Momcilo Perisic, charged with war crimes in Bosnia and shelling of Zagreb.

Four cases are in the appellate proceedings, with two of them referring to crimes Serbs committed against Kosovo Albanians, one of them is for crimes Serb committed against Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica and one is for Serb atrocities against Bosnian Muslims in Visegrad.
