DUBROVNIK, June 18 (Hina) - UNESCO World Heritage Centre director Francesco Bandarin, who is on a Croatian visit, on Saturday toured the southern Adriatic resort of Dubrovnik.

He told the press that awareness of the importance of preserving cultural and natural riches was developed in Croatia, and that experts in charge of preserving the Croatian heritage on the UNESCO World Heritage List met international standards.

Bandarin said the cultural heritage would play an important role in Croatia's development.

Speaking of the ex-Yugoslav Army's attacks on Dubrovnik in the early 1990s, Bandarin said the war in Croatia had shown that the attackers did not respect either UNESCO or international laws, and that the destruction of Dubrovnik had left a deep impression on the UNESCO.

He commended the postwar reconstruction of Dubrovnik, which he said proved that even the most demolished monuments could be renovated.

Representatives of the Culture Ministry gave Bandarin a list of another 11 potential locations for the UNESCO World Heritage List.

After visiting Dubrovnik's historical centre, Bandarin was received by Mayor Dubravka Suica.
