LJUBLJANA, June 14 (Hina) - Jelko Kacin, a Slovene member of the European Parliament, has said that the Croatian law to prevent illegal chartering in its territorial waters is discriminatory because it applies only to foreign vessels and not to those from Croatia.

New Croatian regulations limit the number of passengers aboard vessels, which particularly bothers owners from Austria, Germany, Slovenia and Italy, Kacin told the European Parliament's Transport and Tourism Committee on Monday.

As soon as the owner of a foreign vessel enters Croatian waters, he or she must apply for a vignette and submit a list of persons who will be on board the vessel for the duration of the validity of the vignette, which is one year. If there is a person on board who is not on the list, if there is no list or if it is not certified with a vignette, the owner faces a fine or even confiscation of the vessel, he said.

Kacin was quoted by Slovene news agency STA as saying on Tuesday that "European Union institutions must address the discriminatory practice that is being applied in the Croatian Adriatic," particularly in the light of the fact that Croatia is a candidate for EU membership.
