Croatian Finance ministry reports higher domestic debt than external debt at end of March

ZAGREB, June 13 (Hina) - The total public debt came to 115.3 billion kuna at the end of March this year, accounting for 51.7 percent in this year's expected Gross Domestic Product, the Croatian Finance Ministry reported on Monday.

The total debt rose by five billion kuna in the first three months of 2005. In this period the domestic debt rose by 11.8 billion kuna, with the external debt falling by 6.8 billion kuna.

This was for the first time after several years for Croatia to have a higher domestic debt than its external debt.

The external debt made up 56.9 billion kuna (49.4 percent), while the domestic debt amounted to 58.3 billion kuna (50.6 percent).

The total debt, registered in late March, rose by five billion kuna (4.6) percent from the end of December 2004. The debt in March increased by 1.5 billion kuna (1.3 percent) in comparison to February.

In the first three months this year, the external debt decreased by 6.8 billion kuna. The domestic debt, however, increased by 11.8 billion kuna, or by one quarter (25.3 percent) from the end of December 2004.
