STRASBOURG, June 8 (Hina/AFP) - The Luxembourg EU Presidency said in Strasbourg on Wednesday it was certain that membership talks with Croatia would be opened soon, but it did not mention any concrete date.

Luxembourg Minister Delegate of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Nicolas Schmit said in the European Parliament that the decision on the start of membership talks with Croatia remained open and that it would be positive and adopted unanimously as all decisions on the start of EU membership talks.

Schmit did not rule out the possibility that this issue would be discussed by the heads of state and government of the EU's 25 member-states at a summit to be held in Brussels on June 16 and 17.

Schmit welcomed Zagreb's exemplary cooperation with the task force set up by the EU to continue evaluating Croatia's cooperation with the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague, reiterating that the tribunal's chief prosecutor, Carla del Ponte, had a similar opinion.

The task force, which held its first meeting in Luxembourg on April 26, consists of representatives of the current EU chair and representatives of the next two presiding countries, Great Britain and Austria. So far, Britain has been most critical towards Croatia, while Austria has been most supportive.
