GOETTWEIG, June 4 (Hina) - For Croatia it is important to open entry talks with the European Union, the chairman of the Croatian parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, Gordan Jandrokovic, said at the European Forum Wachau in Austria on Saturday.

On the second day of the forum, Jandrokovic spoke of Croatia's foreign policy in a debate on the contribution of new EU members to the common foreign and security policy.

"That's important not only for Croatia but for the entire region as well, because Croatia serves as an example for countries in the region that meeting European standards and democratic values can lead to the wellbeing of citizens and the entire region," said Jandrokovic.

All speakers said that EU enlargement had a positive effect both on the Union and its new members, notably on security and economic progress.

"That's a positive signal for Croatia, which expects the launching of negotiations on full EU membership," said Jandrokovic.

The European Forum Wachau is taking place at the Goettweig monastery in Lower Austria on June 3-5. It has pooled officials and senior representatives from EU members.

The forum is being held under the auspices of Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik.

Slovene Prime Minister Janez Jansa and Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel will participate in the forum tomorrow.
