Pensioners' representative says burden of crisis shifted onto the old

ZAGREB, Feb 23 (Hina) - Retirees in Croatia are today in an extremely difficult situation with the average pension accounting for 38.6 percent of the average monthly salary, which is the lowest pension in Europe, said Josip Vincek, head of the MUH (Matica Umirovljenika Hrvatske) nongovernmental union of pensioners' associations.

In addition, pensions have been frozen, and it is unacceptable to shift the burden of the crisis on the weakest and oldest in society, Vincek said at a conference dedicated to the project "For Tolerant Social Coexistence of All Generations".

Croatia and other European countries have many common problems in light of the fact that an increasing share of the elderly in the population has an impact on economic, social and political relations. Together with similar organisations in Europe, MUH wants to seek the best solutions to be applied before Croatia's admission to the European Union, the MUH leader said.

The project "For Tolerant Social Coexistence of All Generations" is part of the "Europe for Citizens" programme, funded by the EU and designed to promote inter-generational solidarity and volunteering in society.

Representatives of associations of elderly citizens from Croatia, Italy, Macedonia and Slovenia discussed their experience in that area at today's event in Zagreb.

Vesna Siranovic of the department for inter-generational solidarity of the Croatian Ministry of Family Affairs, Veterans and Inter-generational Solidarity, said that over recent years Croatia had started implementing programmes designed for old people.
