BATINA, May 9 (Hina) - Wreath-laying ceremonies were held in front of a monument erected in memory of soldiers killed during the Battle of Batina in eastern Croatia on Monday, 9 May, on the occasion of Victory Day and Europe Day.

Wreaths were placed and candles lit by Brigadier Franjo Krzinek on behalf of President Stjepan Mesic, Nevenka Majdenic on behalf of the Sabor, and Tomislav Ivic on behalf of the government, as well as by delegations of the embassies of the Russian Federation, Ukraine and Serbia and Montenegro, who paid tribute to soldiers of the Red Army and Partisans who were killed during the 1944 battle near the town of Batina.

Delegations of military envoys from about 10 embassies in Croatia, including the US, British, Macedonian, Czech, Slovak, Indian and Pakistani embassies, also laid wreaths.

Deputy Osijek-Baranja County Prefect Mile Horvat told Hina that "the Battle of Batina engaging Red Army and Partisan troops created conditions for the liberation of Baranja from the German occupation".

In November 1947, three years after the battle, a monument in honour of the Red Army was erected at the site of the fiercest fighting in WWII in this part of Europe. There is also a common grave with the remains of 1,297 Red Army soldiers at the site. A memorial centre was established in 1976.
