ZAGREB, May 6 (Hina) - The Mediterranean Institute for Life Study in Split is expected to produce new mentors who will continue their careers at institutes and universities, academician Miroslav Radman said at a news conference on Friday marking the completion of works on the main institute building, to be opened on May 9.

Radman said the institute would be open to young talents from Croatia, who would undergo training at the institute to continue working in other scientific institutions, while some of them would remain at the institute.

The institute will initially employ some 15 scientists, Radman said, presenting heads of the institute's laboratories. Ivan Djikic will be at the helm of the Laboratory for Molecular Biology of Tumors which will receive domestic and foreign funding in a 30:70 ratio.

Dimitri Krainc will head the Laboratory for Functional Genomics, whose work will be based on cooperation with Krainc's laboratory at the Harvard Medical School in the USA.

Radman will head the Laboratory for the Evolutionary Biology of Microbes, which will cooperate with other laboratories at the institute and the world's best laboratories.

Radman announced the first meeting of the International Council for Science for mid-September. The Council will have the final say in the evaluation of the institute's projects and selection of researchers.

According to Radman, the reconstruction of the institute's main building cost 4-5 million euros.
