"The Police are doing their job, the threatening letters have been collected and are currently being analysed," Mlinaric told reporteds in Zagreb at a presentation of new fire-fighting vehicles. He said there were no real motives for terrorist threats.
Commenting on the anonymous letter received by Croatian Radio Television, RTL television and Vecernji List daily on Thursday, the minister said that serious or less serious threatening letters were common, but they always turned out to be hoaxes. He expects this time not to be different and said there was no room for panic.
Asked whether there was a connection between the terrorist threats and the coming local elections, Mlinaric said everything was possible.
He added police were ready to protect the citizens.
Chief of police Ivica Franic told reporters "it is telling that the letter arrived ahead of the tourist season, so one can assume that it is aimed at spreading panic". He added that some media had contributed to the spreading of panic, but declined to speak in detail.
Apart from the media, the unsigned letter was also addressed to the President's Office and the Government, but they did not receive it. According to the media an unnamed terrorist network will stage attacks in Croatia in the period between May 5 and 12.
