ZAGREB, May 5 (Hina) - The Croatian Environment Protection, Zoning and Construction Ministry on Thursday issued a statement saying that in line with the Government's policy and international conventions it will not allow the storing of radioactive waste on Croatian territory or in Slovenia in the vicinity of the Croatian border.

Ljubljana-based Dnevnik daily on Wednesday cited sources from the Slovene State Agency for Radioactive Waste (ARAO) as saying that Croatia cannot influence the procedure of selecting the location for the building of a storage for low and medium radioactive waste from the Krsko Nuclear Power Plant.

The Croatian Ministry stresses that Croatia can influence the selection of the location for the storage of nuclear waste given that the building of the radioactive waste storage is on the list of activities for which the country building the storage is obliged to notify neighbouring countries of its intent.

Slovenia is expected to establish the location of the future nuclear waste dump by 20 May and so far, according to the daily, eight Slovene municipalities, of which four are bordering with Croatia, have applied to the public bid.

Should Slovenia decide to build the nuclear waste storage in the vicinity of the Croatian border, Croatia will insist on drawing up a study on the impact of the environment, the Croatian ministry reported.
