WASHINGTON/NEW YORK, May 5 (Hina) - A Croatian representative at the United Nations on Wednesday stressed the role of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as the main instrument in eliminating the danger of proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Parties to the NPT, including Croatia, were attending a review conference on the NPT at the U.N. in New York.

The NPT has confirmed its role as the most important instrument in preventing the threat of spreading of nuclear weapons while promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy, Croatian Assistant Foreign and European Integration Minister Tomislav Vidosevic, who was heading the Croatian delegation, said during a general debate.

Review conferences on the NPT are held every five years.

Vidosevic said that Croatia supported all three basic principles of the NPT, nuclear disarmament, the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Vidosevic called on countries that have not signed the Treaty to do so.

At the New York conference Croatia will present a national report on measures taken to implement the NPT.

Croatian legislation on nuclear safety and protection is in line with EU legislation, Vidosevic said, adding that the National Institute for Nuclear Safety had started to function in January this year.

Supporting international documents on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, Vidosevic also called for starting negotiations on an agreement banning the production of fission material for nuclear weapons.
