ZAGREB, May 1 (Hina) - Croatian Journalists' Association (HND) vice president Zdenko Duka said in a press release on Sunday the HND would use its authority to advocate not prosecuting Markica Rebic, Ivica Marijacic, Stjepan Seselj and Domagoj Margetic, who have been indicted by the Hague war crimes tribunal, but added the HND could not defend the publication of protected witnesses' testimonies.

The press release said the HND would like the case to be solved either with the four accused apologising for printing testimonies and revealing the identities of protected witnesses, or with them paying minimum fines.

The press release recalled that a virtually identical case, involving Montenegrin journalist Dusko Jovanovic, had been solved with an apology.

According to the press release, the HND professionally cannot defend the publication of testimonies and revelation of witnesses' identities in this or any other case because the witnesses are protected by law so that no one could endanger them.

Duka noted in the press release that the UN court had asked the accused not to print the tribunal's documents and protected witnesses' testimonies.

He concluded by saying that the HND could not defend their publication in Hrvatsko Slovo and Hrvatski List by referring to media freedoms.
