PODGORICA, April 23 (Hina) - US Ambassador to Serbia and Montenegro Michael Polt said in Podgorica on Friday his country would support every democratic decision by the Montenegrin people, adding it was very important that a referendum on independence be carried out in accordance with international standards, the Montenegrin government said in a press release.

Polt held separate talks with Montenegro's President Filip Vujanovic, Parliament Speaker Ranko Krivokapic, and Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic.

Vujanovic said Montenegro was committed to reforms and determined to organise the referendum in the time envisaged and by respecting international standards.

Krivokapic told the ambassador this year was key for embarking on "Montenegro's European path, which has unjustly been blocked for several years," and that "the process of rounding off Montenegro's statehood will enter the final stage next year, when the citizens of Montenegro will have the chance to have their say about statehood in a democratic and transparent fashion".

Krivokapic and Polt agreed that Montenegro was a stable, multiethnic state where people coexisted and that as such, it played an important part in the region.

Djukanovic told the ambassador the government and other institutions were focused on carrying out reforms and strengthening macroeconomic stability.
